Practice a three-strand braid
Cut three equal practice strands and secure one end to a stable surface. Move the right outer strand over the centre, then the left outer strand over the new centre. Repeat slowly while keeping tension even.
Pause after a short section and compare its width along the length. Loosen and repeat uneven sections rather than pulling them tighter. Use these practice braids for decorative projects, never for climbing, lifting or load-bearing equipment.
